Chinoiserie Nail Polish: Review

For all those out there with a serious fetish for nail polish, listen up. I’ve always been partial to OPI’s nail polish up until I discovered Chinoiserie. Whether you like bold, brash and heady colors painted onto your nails or prefer more subtle and subdued shades, Chinoiserie is guaranteed to have something right for you.
About Chinoiserie
According to the dictionary, Chinoiserie is defined as: “A style of ornamentation current chiefly in the 18th century in Europe, characterized by intricate patterns and an extensive use of motifs identified as Chinese.” When you think of Chinoiserie, think exotic. Think of the East meeting the West. And most of all, think of elegance, opulence and decadence.
Founders
Chinoiserie was started in Los Angeles by celebrity manicurist Tammie Ly and partner Chris Tyler. Tammie often makes custom nail colors for Hollywood actresses and Courtney Love is just one of her many loyal fans. Courtney has also had a shade of nail polish designed in her name: Angelfish. Chinoiserie’s Angelfish nail polish is a beautiful aqua shade with tiny speckles of silver glitter and was created to perfectly match Courtney Love’s aqua blue Versace gown that she once wore to the Oscars. It’s a gorgeous and subtle shade and now available to the public via Chinoiserie’s website.
Where to Buy Chinoiserie Nail Polish
The Chinoiserie Salon is located at 12246 Ventura Blvd. in Los Angeles. You can visit Tammie’s shop if you happen to be in LA, or you can purchase products online directly through her website here.
Famous Fans of Chinoiserie
Courtney Love was referred to Chinoiserie by Sharon Stone, a longtime client of 9 years. Anne Heche is also a fan and had custom nail shades designed to match her wardrobe when she was filming Psycho. Christina Aguilera wore Chinoiserie’s Gold Leaf and Betty when she performed at the 2001 Grammy Awards. Faith Hill wore Baby Doll with Mirror Ball when she performed at the same awards ceremony. Celine Dion chose Mirror Ball while performing in Las Vegas. Eve wore Chinoiserie’s Blush when she performed at the 2002 Grammy’s. Sigourney Weaver’s favorite nail polish is Aquatone and Julianne Moore’s are Feminique and Tiki.
Prices
Tammie will blend custom colors for around $25 a bottle. For pre-existing colors, each bottle of nail polish costs $8.
Nail Polish Styles
Chinoiserie’s nail polish comes in three different styles: Cremes, Sparkles and Frosts and Shimmers.
Nail Polish Shades
Under the Creme section there are many traditional shades like Betty, which is a classic red, Baby Doll, which is a milky pink, and Baby Veil, a sheer pink shade. Those that feel a little more daring may be more inclined to choose colors like Illegally Blonde 2, which is a neon pink shade that you may need to wear sunglasses to view, Psycho, a bright red orange shade, and London Taxi, a glossy black shade. My experience has been great with Betty and the pale blue Manet shade.
My favorites under the Sparkle category are: Majesty, a silver nail polish with silver glitter, Chinois, a bright red color with red sparkling glitter, and Stellar Night, a midnight blue shade with deep silver sparkles.
When it comes to Frosts, my favorites are Angelfish as mentioned above, and Cherry Blossoms, which is a frosty pink color with minimal amounts of silver glitter.
Durability
I’ve found Chinoiserie’s nail polish to be excellent in quality and extremely long lasting. This nail polish doesn’t chip easily, especially if you apply a top layer of protective nail varnish over the coat of paint.
Rating
I give this nail polish a well-deserved 10 stars for both color and durability and highly recommend this product.
